Video :: Gamelan Sekar Jaya

The Bay Area collective Gamelan Sekar Jaya performed to a rapt L@TE audience on July 30. The evening showcased Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s musician’s performing on two different gamelan ensembles—the bronze gamelan angklung and the gender wayang. Guest artist I Dewa Puta Berata, a master musician from Bali, led the ensembles. In the video, below, the bronze gamelan angklung ensemble, which includes about eighteen musicians, perform on single-octave instruments, tuned to the slendro scale. Music of gamelan angklung plays a special role in Bali-Hindu religion, where it traditionally accompanies temple ceremonies and cremation rituals.

Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s performance was part of artist-in-residence David Wilson’s summer-long L@TE series and exhibition, David Wilson: Gatherings / MATRIX 233. Wilson’s programming for L@TE concludes this Friday, August 13 with a selection of field recordings by Xiu Xiu front man Jamie Stewart and a presentation of films from the Canyon Cinema archive by local film critic Max Goldberg.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
