Larry Sultan & Mike Mandel

A new book, simply titled Larry Sultan and Mike Mandel, features decades of significant work the two photographers collaborated on between the 1970s and 1990s. An early champion of the duo, BAM/PFA exhibited Sultan and Mandel’s work as part its MATRIX program in 1983. Though the two had been working on the book for several years, Sultan was unable to enjoy its release, as he succumbed to cancer in 2009 at the age of 63.

In this conversation, held on June 22, 2008 as part of a series of events celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the MATRIX Program at BAM/PFA, Mandel, Sultan, Jim Goldberg, and former MATRIX Curator Constance Lewallen discuss the MATRIX 61 exhibition Newsroom.
